Tesla INVESTOR DAY

The third chapter of Tesla's "secret ambition" is revealed

Musk's goals for leading Tesla

At the Tesla investor conference on March 1, U.S. time, Tesla CEO Elon Musk pointed out that there is a path to sustainability and that the planet can feed 8 billion people today.

Tesla Senior Vice President Drew Baglino noted that today's energy economy is dirty and wasteful, with 80 percent of the world's energy coming from fossil fuels. Musk emphasized that the use of fossil fuels wastes a lot of energy. He also pointed out that calculations for a sustainable world often assume the same waste as a fossil fuel-driven world, which is inaccurate.

Tesla presented a slide showing what it would take to achieve a sustainable economy. Executives noted that while these numbers may seem large, they are not really when compared to the global economy, with about $10 trillion invested in building a sustainable energy economy.

Specifically, the goals are 240 TWh of energy storage, 30 TWh of renewable power, $10 trillion in manufacturing investment, less than half the energy requirements of the fuel economy, less than 0.2% of the earth's footprint, 10% of global GDP in 2022, and zero insurmountable resource challenges.

A Sustainable Energy Economyy Is Within Reach & We Should Accelerate It

Musk has divided the path to this "secret ambition" into five steps.

Tesla five steps

The first part is using renewable energy sources to be deployed on a large scale for solar energy.

EVs Use Energy Far More Efficiently

The second part is the electrification of vehicles, which Musk said would require the production of 20 million electric cars a year to achieve that goal. Tesla showed a hypothetical fleet of about 85 million cars. Tesla emphasized the energy efficiency of electric vehicles, with the energy to boil water for a pot of pasta allowing the Model 3 to travel one kilometer.

Switch to Electric Vehicles

Switch to Electic Vehicles

The third part is for homes, businesses, and industries to turn to heat pumps. Heat pumps can transfer energy from the outside of a house to the inside, reducing energy consumption by 33 times for heating a building. From an industry perspective, heat pumps pave the way for increased efficiency.

In addition, Tesla discussed high-temperature heat transfer and hydrogen. Musk noted that hydrogen energy would be useful for industrial processes but should not be used in cars.

According to Musk's plan, the world is expected to achieve this ambitious sustainable energy plan by 2050.

To understand the great success of Tesla in this ambition, first understand the following 2 questions

What is Euro NCAP?

Euro NCAP (European New Car Assessment Programme) is an independent organization that evaluates the safety of new passenger vehicles sold in Europe. It was established in 1997 and is supported by several European governments, motoring and consumer organizations, and insurers.

The primary goal of Euro NCAP is to provide consumers with accurate and independent information about the safety performance of new vehicles. It conducts a series of crash tests and safety assessments on new cars, rating them on a five-star scale based on their safety features and performance.

Euro NCAP's safety tests include frontal, side, and pole impact tests, as well as tests of pedestrian protection, child safety, and safety assist systems, such as lane departure warnings and autonomous emergency braking.

The results of Euro NCAP's tests are widely reported in the media and are often used by consumers to inform their purchasing decisions. The organization has been credited with promoting advances in vehicle safety and encouraging car manufacturers to prioritize safety.

What is Green NCAP Rating What does it do? What are the criteria?

Green NCAP (New Car Assessment Programme) is an independent organization that evaluates the environmental impact of new passenger vehicles sold in Europe. It was established in 2018 as an extension of Euro NCAP.

The primary goal of Green NCAP is to provide consumers with accurate and independent information about the environmental performance of new vehicles. It conducts a series of tests and assessments on new cars, rating them on a five-star scale based on their environmental impact.

The criteria for a Green NCAP rating include the following:

Energy efficiency measures the vehicle's energy consumption and CO2 emissions per kilometer.

Air quality: This measures the vehicle's particulate matter (PM) emissions and nitrogen oxides (NOx).

Noise pollution: This measures the vehicle's noise level inside and outside the car.

Green NCAP uses standardized testing procedures to evaluate vehicles' environmental performance, including laboratory and on-road testing. The organization also considers the vehicle's entire life cycle, from production to end-of-life disposal.

The results of Green NCAP's tests are reported on a five-star scale, with the highest-rated vehicles having the least environmental impact. The organization's ratings encourage car manufacturers to prioritize environmental performance in their designs and help consumers make more informed purchasing decisions.

Tesla's Green Safety

Model 3 was awarded 5 stars by Green NCAP in November 2022! Model S received a 5-star Euro NCAP safety rating in 2014.

The significance of 5 stars is to drive an important component of the overall ambitious blueprint.

Consume less, spend less.

In Green NCAP efficiency testing, Model 3 achieved a near-perfect score of 9.6/10, excelling in cold and warm lab tests and highway tests. Model 3 received the highest score of any vehicle tested to date in the highway test. By comparison, the average internal combustion engine vehicle tested in 2022 scored 4.2/10, and the average hybrid vehicle scored 5.1/10.

Tesla's continuous iterative process introduces operational vehicle changes to improve thermal comfort, driving dynamics, efficiency, range, and more. This ensures that new customers get the latest and greatest hardware and get the most out of every dollar (or euro) spent on energy.

No air pollutant emissions

Model 3 and all Tesla vehicles emit zero emissions as part of Tesla's mission to accelerate the adoption of sustainable transportation and energy. And it is also an important indicator in achieving green emissions.

Reduction of room temperature gas emissions

As an electric vehicle, the Model 3 does not directly emit greenhouse gases. The Model 3 scored a near-perfect 9.8/10 in Green NCAP's greenhouse gas assessment thanks to its low energy consumption and relatively clean EU electricity production.

Data on Tesla's 2021 Impact Report shows that regions with more Tesla Model 3s produce fewer greenhouse gases than burning gasoline.
